Crowdfunding 101: Family and Friends

Before I go any further, let me state the obvious, “raising money for a film is hard!” Great, now that we have that out the way….let’s proceed. Crowdfunding can be an amazing way to take the bull by the horns and green light yourself, however, it’s not a road well traveled alone. From my perspective, having a kick butt team is not only beneficial, it’s imperative to having a successful campaign.

A great team:

  • Helps you rise above the noise and spread the word about your campaign

  • Gets your campaign in front of more eyes, which can lead to more donations

  • Can serve as great emotional support when things get challenging

These are just some of the benefits of having a kick butt team as you set out on your crowdfunding adventures. But where do you find your squad? How do you connect with your tribe? The truth of the matter is, this can be incredibly challenging. In countless articles on crowdfunding, these challenges are never discussed, as if it’s a walk in the park. Just go out there, gather your team, and off you go. The reality is that finding people you can trust is hard work. Sure posting ads on Facebook, in News Papers, etc. can be helpful, but it can also attract people who aren’t truly committed, or just looking to get paid. For most people starting out, you’re not working with a lot of money, so paying team members is out of the question. SO WHAT IS AN INSPIRING FILMMAKER TO DO?

Hit up family and friends. Yes! Connect with people who love you and believe in you, whether or not your campaign is a massive success, or a complete failure. Remember, you don’t need to have 100 people on your squad to have a successful campaign. 4 or 5 truly committed individuals is far better, than 60 people who will drop off at the drop of a hat or simply don’t give a “S#*t”. Reach out to family and friends first, and if you can find one or two people who are willing to lend a helping hand, you have struck gold!

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and get your movie made. Remember, if you don’t tell your story, NO ONE ELSE WILL!
